Introduction
This website is a tribute to the life and a celebration of the work of HERMAN MEES. In time, the details of more than 300 paintings will be added to this virtual collection. We hope you enjoy them. Paintings have been researched, photographed and added to the website by members of his family.
Hermannus Ellen Mees was born in 1880 in Veendam, the Netherlands. He taught drawing in the College of Art & Science in Rotterdam and excelled in portrait painting in oil and pastels. He was influenced by his mentor and friend Willem van Konijnenburg for a while, and thereafter followed his own direction as an Impressionist. Examples of his work can be found all over Holland and the rest of Europe, as well as on other continents.
He is remembered particularly for his ability to capture the character of his sitter.
Herman Mees died in 1964 in Zuidlaren, the Netherlands. All pictures are copyright. Copyright for each picture lies with the owner of that particular picture. Reproduction of part or all of the contents of any of the web pages is prohibited, and no images contained in the website may be used for commercial purposes.
NOTE: Where no date for a painting is known, this website offers the current year because it is largely used by contemporary artists. This obviously makes some of the dates for works inaccurate. We apologise for this and hope a solution will be found. Should you be able to add to the information on this website regarding the dates, sizes and subjects of a painting, please use the website's email function (click on the 'react' or 'reageer' icon for that particular picture) to let us know.
